Our Approach
How Mindful Community Tutors works with teachers and students.
Mindful Community Tutors works under guidance from teachers. The teachers identify students who would benefit from individual tutoring, and the subject areas to be taught.

Tutoring is done either in person at the school or remotely via Virtual Platform, such as Zoom. Teachers provide weekly lesson plans which may include an instructional video for the tutors to watch before the session. Each session lasts between 45 minutes and 1 hour.
The session begins with establishing a positive mindset. Children are asked to recap three positives that have happened to them in the previous week. We explain that thinking of positive things can make them feel better if they are mad or sad or just generally feeling low. In addition to encouraging them to think of three positive things that have happened each day, this approach relaxes the children and makes them more receptive to learning.
Tutors continue to follow the teacher’s weekly plan. Click here for a sample lesson. There is a short break for a few minutes between subjects where students can ask tutors questions about their lives. This encourages intergenerational socialization and the children particularly enjoy hearing about how things were many years ago.
The last few minutes of the session consist of mindfulness exercises. This skill will help them throughout their lives. To see benefits of mindfulness in children and examples of exercises click here.
