Herb Braidman, 1935-2023
Mindful Community Tutors is very sad to announce the passing of Herb Braidman who was so special to us.
I really would describe him as 88 years young. Once he said that he was going to tutor, I did some online training with him, he was keen to learn and picked it up surprisingly quickly.
This is what Ms Rodriguez wrote about the progress he had facilitated with the little girl he tutored last year:
“Emery has graduated to 2nd grade spelling words! She is also reading early 2nd grade level books. She is doing great. Emery loves being called to the office to escort Herb to the classroom and most of all feeling loved and supported every time she works with him. Thank you, Herb!”
The day before Herb was hospitalized a few months ago he called me to say he didn’t feel well, and asked if he should go into school, wearing a mask, because he didn’t want to let Emery down. Needless to say, I said no and that he should look after himself.
After what he went through I did not expect him back tutoring this year. But there he was, on the phone to me telling me that he really wanted to do it, despite quite a few stairs being involved.

Herb’s student card.
His student this year drew this picture when she heard he was ill. She put in the cane because she said he used to tap with his cane as she counted. She wanted him to come back and was so sad when Ms Rodriguez told her his heart stopped beating for ever.
Thanks so much to his family for choosing our organization for donations in his memory because the tutoring was so dear to him.
We are so grateful to have had him with us, almost to the end of his life. He is an inspiration to us all. May he rest in peace.
